PB1A on Superhero Comics

Image
Today’s movie theaters would be incomplete without a superhero action movie. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe having 20 films released and many more on the way, it has become the highest grossing film franchise of all time. Along with the Marvel movies, DC has been giving its own superheroes the movie treatment and both franchises have released multiple television shows. It’s hard to imagine a time before all of this, but the movies would be nothing without their comic book origins, so that’s what I am going to analyze for my genre. There are plenty of different superheroes I could pick for analysis but I’ll go with my two favorite heroes, the Flash and Captain America. In my research I found out that there have been many different stories with many different writers, even for the same characters. But overall superhero comics have the same style to them. I’m sure you’ve seen it plenty of times. They have colorful pages with many different pictures of what’s going on in the story....

How I Annotate

While I was reading Elbow’s piece on first and second order thinking I annotated a few things. The very first thing I annotated was how he described first order thinking and second order thinking. The reason I did this was because I wanted a brief understanding of what he was trying to convey. I didn’t want to reread the whole paragraph just to understand what he was saying again. Another reason I highlighted certain sentences was because I can make connections to other works I read. Doing that helped me better understand what Elbow was trying say by relating it to something else I already understand. And the final reason I annotate papers is to comment on what I agree and disagree about. That helps me remember I read more because it can become the topic of discussion. My partner annotates in a similar fashion. He highlights a specific phrase or sentence that he agrees or disagrees with. One thing that he does that I don’t do, however, is highlighting questions that the author spec...

About Me

My name is Nicholas Carr and I’m from Southampton, PA. This is my first year at Penn State and I’m majoring in Aerospace engineering. At first I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to go for, but I had always liked math and space. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I found an interest in physics as well. All of that along with my admiration for NASA made it a much easier choice. Outside of school I love to play frisbee, soccer and video games. I’ve played soccer and video games for as long as I can remember. I used to play goalie but I’ve found left back to be my favorite position. Frisbee, however, is a newfound interest. It started with KanJam and evolved into ultimate frisbee with the help of my friends and the German teacher in high school. I also love to listen to music. I grew up listening to what my parents grew up with because they would constantly listen to music (and still do). No car trip is complete unless my dad names every single song that comes on the radio...
